Plot summary
Film is set in the future. Humans on spaceship named "Tantra" are exploring the unknown part of the Universe. The spaceship gets trapped by the mysterious Iron Star. The Iron Star's powerful force of gravity is to hold the spaceship for 20 years. The humans are facing a very tough survival challenge, being surrounded by the invisible predators. The predators can eat human flesh right through heavy spacesuits, and some crew-members disappear. Only the light from "Tantra" can scare the predators away.

- The Andromeda Nebula was planned as the first of a film series, but the rest were never made; officially because star Sergei Stolyarov died, but also because the whole trilogy budget went on the first film and the alien planet's society was seen as criticism of the Soviet Union.
- Some in the Soviet Union called The Andromeda Nebula mildly pornographic on release, and Britain's Marxism Today, fifteen years later, cited the "Russian space tits controversy" as showing both widening boundaries of the permissible and increased censorship in the early Brezhnev era.
