Biography

Edith Massey was an American actress and singer who became one of the Dreamlanders, the group of regular performers in John Waters's movies. Waters, a filmmaker, discovered her in 1969 while she was employed as a barmaid at Pete's Hotel in Baltimore's Fell's Point, and he gave her a part in Multiple Maniacs (1970). In that film she played herself, and in a dream sequence she also appeared as the Virgin Mary. Her cult following grew from five Waters films: she was Divine's egg-loving mother Edie in Pink Flamingos (1972), Aunt Ida in Female Trouble (1974), and the evil Queen Carlotta of Mortville in Desperate Living (1977). Her final role for Waters came in Polyester (1981) as Cuddles Kovinsky. In the early 1970s she also opened a thrift store in Fell's Point called Edith's Shopping Bag. The director Robert Maier made a 1975 mockumentary short, Love Letter to Edie, about her.
