Plot summary
In 1954 London, Reynolds Woodcock designs dresses for members of high society. His sister Cyril manages the day-to-day operations of his fashion house, and she guards him from anything that could pull his attention away from his work. Reynolds is superstitious and sews hidden messages into the linings of the gowns he makes. After designing a new gown for Lady Harding, he meets Alma Elson, a foreign waitress, at a restaurant close to his country house.

- Method actor Daniel Day-Lewis spent a year learning dressmaking from Marc Happel to play couturier Reynolds Woodcock, and gained enough skill to recreate an iconic Balenciaga dress for the film.
- The crew moved into 3 Fitzroy Square, which served as accommodation and storage as well as a set, and Daniel Day-Lewis stayed in character throughout the shoot; he called it an "awful" experience, saying "We were living on top of each other. There was no space. That entire house was like a termite nest".
- Reynolds Woodcock's obsessive fastidiousness was loosely inspired by English-American designer Charles James, and Paul Thomas Anderson first became interested in fashion after reading about designer Cristóbal Balenciaga.
- Paul Thomas Anderson was his own cinematographer, so no cinematographer appears in the credits; his former gaffer Michael Bauman was credited as "lighting cameraman", and the pair pushed 35 mm film stock and filled frames with "theatrical haze" to dirty up the look.
