Plot summary

Petey Wheatstraw is born during a Miami hurricane and grows up under a mentor named Bantu, who teaches him kung fu and self-respect and a vow never to bow before any man. He becomes a nightclub comedian and books a run of shows at Steve's Den in Los Angeles. The booking alarms the comedy team Leroy and Skillet, who have borrowed heavily from the Mob to pay for an opening of their own at another club the next day. When Petey refuses to delay his act, their henchmen kill his partner Ted's young brother Larry and then shoot up the funeral, killing Petey and others. The Devil appears, tells Petey his death was a mistake and offers to undo it if Petey marries his daughter and gives him a grandson. Petey recalls Bantu's words and agrees.
