Big break
Moore said that in 1970, while employed at Dolphin's of Hollywood, a record store in Los Angeles, he started hearing obscene "Dolemite" stories told by a local man, Rico.
A change of course
Moore joined the US Army and was part of an entertainment unit in Germany. There he earned the nickname the Harlem Hillbilly for his R&B renditions of country songs, and he grew interested in comedy after expanding a singing performance for other servicemen.
Behind the camera
Moore produced Big Brown's 1973 album The First Man of Poetry, Big Brown: Between Heaven and Hell, after recording street poets including Brown, who had influenced Bob Dylan in Greenwich Village.
