Plot summary
Konstantin Chernenko, General Secretary of the party's Central Committee, lies in the Moscow Central Clinical Hospital as the Soviet era nears its end. He is old and infirm but keeps a firm hold on power, and he insists that power is only ever seized, never handed over. Keeping him alive suits the elites and the security services, since groups score political points while the body still lives; he is condemned to life. Sasha, a young nurse who is small and easily overlooked, is responsible for the top official's life. A war continues in Afghanistan and he commands nuclear weapons.
