Biography

Irina Kupchenko is a Russian actress whose film debut in Andrey Konchalovskiy's A Nest of Gentry (1969) brought her early fame for the role of Lisa. Born in Vienna and raised in Kiev, she studied acting at the Shchukin Theatrical School and graduated in 1970, then joined the Vakhtangov Theatre company in Moscow. Her screen career included work with directors Nikita Mikhalkov, Eldar Ryazanov, and Ilya Averbakh, as well as many leading Soviet actors. On stage she appeared as Octavia in Antony and Cleopatra, Dolly in Anna Karenina, Lady Anna in Richard III, and Clodia Pulcher in Martovskie Idy, based on Thornton Wilder's novel. She also played Roxana in Cyrano de Bergerac and performed in Svobodnaya lyubov at La'Teatr. She was named People's Actor of Russia and taught acting at the Shchukin Theatrical School.
