Plot summary
An old farmer shows his three sons a field of wheat trampled in the night and tells them to keep watch. The older brothers send the youngest, John, instead. In the dark he talks to a hedgehog he once saved and catches a mare, who carries him over fields and swamps before he lets her go on her promise to leave their fields alone. In the morning he finds two horses in the stable and a small Humpbacked Foal, sent by the mare to help him. At the bazaar the King claims the horses, and John whistles them back, so the King makes him chief groom. The people's fondness for John grows, and the King, who can find no reason to execute him, follows his chamberlain's advice and sends John to fetch the Firebird.
