Plot summary
Jon and his wife Mary live and work in Patch Town, a village outside the Patch Enterprises toy factory, where no employee has children or remembers a childhood. The dolls on the assembly line are cut from magical cabbages, and when Jon smuggles one home, he and Mary raise the infant inside it, Daisy, as their own. A neighboring couple who stole a cabbage too are caught, their baby taken from them. Jon decides to get his family out. The black-market smuggler Darryl gives him a file on Bethany, the child who bought him at a mall in the 1980s, and Jon sets out to find her.
