Plot summary
Sean Nault is a homicide detective on a world where magic powers everything and science is regarded as myth. He is controversial for not using magic in investigations, preferring to judge whether a suspect is lying by his own perceptions instead of truth spells. When victims turn up killed by a weapon that leaves no magical trace, Nault takes charge of the investigation. His search brings him to Winston Churchill, a 130-year-old sorcerer, who tells him of a parallel universe where science rules and magic does not exist. Churchill says Nault has no counterpart in that other world, which makes him able to travel between the two. Nault teams up with Lenore, a pragmatist who believes science is more than myth.
