Paper Angels (2014) on Netflix

Plot summary

Lynn Brandt decides she can no longer stay with her husband Darryl, whose drinking has made him mean and lazy, so at Christmas she takes their children and leaves for another town without a plan. She finds work as a waitress, and her son Thomas enrolls at a new high school, where classmates taunt him over the family's poverty and a star athlete targets him when he tries out for the basketball team. Kevin Morrell, a businessman wrestling with a failing company and a twin pregnancy at home, returns to the big-brother program run by pastor and coach Graham Cody and becomes Thomas's mentor. Around the holidays the Salvation Army's Paper Angels program, which lets donors anonymously fill the wishes of children in need, involves both families.
