Plot summary
After serving twelve years for attempted murder and armed robbery, Eddie Palmer moves in with his grandmother Vivian and takes a job as a janitor at the local school. Vivian keeps an eye on Sam, a boy whose mother, Shelly, is a drug addict and often goes away with her abusive boyfriend Jerry. While Shelly is gone, Eddie becomes the boy's temporary guardian, and he grows attached to Sam despite his own reluctance. He takes the boy to watch a football game at his former high school, buys him a root beer float, gives him a ukulele for his birthday and shows him how to play it. At a bowling fundraiser he meets Maggie, Sam's teacher.
