Plot summary
Hong Kong's Commercial Crime Bureau runs an operation against Feng Hua International, a trading company whose chief suspect is known as Boss. Officers plant interception devices in the company and listen to its calls. Johnny Leung, the Inspector leading the team, is experienced and involved with Mandy Yam, the wife of his friend Kelvin Lee. Gene Yeung is a family man with a daughter and a son who is seriously ill. Max Lam is young, new to the team, and about to marry the daughter of a wealthy man. During one night's monitoring, Yeung and Lam overhear a prediction that a stock price will surge when the market opens the next morning. Yeung asks Lam to delete that part of the recording.

- Louis Koo thought the directors were playing a trick on him when they approached him with the screenplay, because his character was much older than Lau Ching-wan's. To play the part he applied makeup, gained 30 pounds and got a new hairstyle.
- In 2017, director Choi Dong-hoon began production on a South Korean remake of Overheard titled Wiretap, but production was halted so its actor Kim Woo-bin could undergo cancer treatment, and Choi moved on to another project.
- Before filming began on Overheard, Daniel Wu held a party at his home with the rest of the lead actors, so the three could establish their on-screen chemistry beforehand.
