Plot summary
Joanna Stayton and her husband, Grant Stayton III, live aboard their yacht on her family's money, and Joanna treats the people around her badly. While the yacht is docked at Elk Cove, Oregon, she hires Dean Proffitt, a carpenter and widower raising four sons, to remodel her closet. She rejects the finished closet and pays him nothing, and their argument ends with him thrown off the boat. That night she goes up on deck for her wedding ring and falls overboard, and she is pulled from the water with no memory.
