Plot summary
Thessaloniki, home to a Jewish community five centuries old, is under German occupation in 1943. The story centers on an ouzeri where the composer Vasilis Tsitsanis performs with his company, a room that draws German officers, Greek collaborators, black marketeers and Resistance members. Yorgos, a young carpenter, works there in the evenings and belongs to the Greek Resistance, operating a radio transmitter. Estrea Beza, a Jewish girl, is assigned as his assistant, and love grows between them. Yorgos is Christian, and their love is forbidden. The occupation's measures against the city's Jewish residents mount. Tsitsanis is at the start of his career in Rembetico music.
