Plot summary
In a fenced compound, a couple raise their son and two daughters into adulthood with no knowledge of the world beyond the property. The words the children learn have been reassigned: the sea means a large armchair, and zombies are little yellow flowers. Endurance games fill the days, along with chores and tapes of their own video recordings; stickers mark good behavior, while bad behavior brings physical and verbal abuse. The siblings believe a brother who disobeyed lives on the far side of the fence, and they throw supplies over to him. Only the father drives out, to manage a factory. Christina, an employee there, is brought to the house and paid to have sex with the son, blindfolded on the drive so she cannot find the place again.
