Plot summary
Angeliki dies on her eleventh birthday, jumping from the balcony of the family apartment. The police investigate and ask whether she may have suffered trauma at home, while her relatives insist the death was an accident. The household is made up of her grandparents, her mother Eleni, her fourteen-year-old aunt Myrto and her siblings Philippos and Alkmini. The grandfather is friendly toward neighbors and colleagues; at home he is abusive and oppressive to his daughters and grandchildren. No instruction of his may be refused and no sadness shown, and Eleni is scolded for grieving her daughter. The grandmother, afraid of him, goes along with everything he says. Philippos is degraded for trouble at school and for being less clever than Alkmini. Myrto turns to a teacher and gets no help.
