Plot summary
Mary belongs to an ancient Celtic race that practices magic. She and Fergal, her teenage son, keep moving to new homes because someone is hunting them, and they are terrified of being found. Their pursuer is Cathal, a killer and once Mary's lover, who picks up their trail and will go to any lengths to reach them, calling on dark arts as he goes. To keep Fergal safe, Mary turns to an old magic of her own. When people living nearby start dying violently, killed by a force nobody can identify, the fear in the area grows, and it is not clear whether Cathal is responsible for the killings or trying to destroy the creature behind them.
