Plot summary
Noronha supports his family on a civil servant's pay. His wife is Gorda, and the couple has several elder daughters at home. The youngest, Silene, is a virgin who has been away at boarding school. She returns without warning, and Noronha learns why: during a hysterical fit she killed a female cat along with the cat's seven newborns. The school expelled her for it.
