Plot summary
Taoca makes a living as a part-time fisherman and a small-time con artist. Out on the water he comes upon a man clinging to a buoy, and the man tells him he is God. Taoca does not take the claim seriously until miracles follow. God has grown tired and wants a vacation, but the universe needs someone to run it in his absence, so he has come to Brazil's northeast in search of a saint suited to the task. Taoca joins the search, and the two travel the country together. On the road they meet Madá, who asks to come along because she wants to reach São Paulo, the city where her mother died.
