Plot summary
Val moved from Pernambuco to São Paulo thirteen years ago, leaving her daughter Jéssica behind with relatives. She works as the live-in housekeeper for Carlos and Bárbara, looking after their son Fabinho. Jéssica is nearly eighteen when she calls and asks to stay while she takes the entrance exam for a São Paulo university. Val asks her employers for permission; Bárbara agrees and expects the visit to be short. At the airport Val fails to recognize the daughter she has not seen in ten years. Jéssica refuses her mother's small room, takes the guest room, eats at the family table and questions the household rules. Val grows frustrated with her daughter, while Jéssica is upset at how her mother is treated in the house.
