Plot summary
The United States has outlawed sex before marriage for the last three years, with one exception: 12 hours a year when single people are allowed it. Rexton Labs issues a wrist tattoo that changes color for the exemption. Owen owns a pizza shop and has kept the night free to propose to Malika, who over sushi tells him she plans to sleep with someone else in their apartment. Allie, a singer who records cover songs for commercials, goes out with her friend Jacinta hoping for a real connection; Jacinta pairs off and leaves her. Owen complains about the breakup to his mother, Linda, who sends him away because she has plans with her partner Rick. Owen and Allie bump into each other outside Allie's apartment, the sushi comes back up, and they part.

- Director Will Gluck rewrote Travis Braun's original script without credit, Deadline's Matt Grobar reported, and made Monica Barbaro's character a singer after casting her, writing in the stage fright she has in real life.
- Will Gluck cut almost all of the sex and nudity out of the film during editing because test audiences reacted negatively to it and he felt it distracted from the protagonists' love story.
- The soundtrack was put out as a three-song EP more than a full week before the film's release, and its title track is by New Radicals, their first new release in 28 years.
