Plot summary
Bass plays wind and percussion instruments in the empty square of an Italian village, waiting for a coin to land in his rusty iron cup. Tippy, a peasant girl, arrives with a large gold coin that she intends to toss into the plaza fountain and wish upon. Before she can, Treble appears and plays a piece on his string instruments, pulling her attention away. Bass answers with a bigger tune of his own, and Treble does not back down, each man trying to outplay the other for the girl's coin. Tippy stands between them as the two performers go back and forth, and the square fills with their competing music.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Unlike most Pixar shorts, which grow out of storyboards and scriptwriting, One Man Band developed its music alongside the story: composer Michael Giacchino collaborated extensively with directors Andrew Jimenez and Mark Andrews because the music carries such a large role in the dialogue-free film.
- In late 2004, Ed Catmull asked directors Andrew Jimenez and Mark Andrews to come to his office; the pair were nervous about what it meant, then relieved when he instead asked them to make a brand new Pixar short film.
