Plot summary
Pat Calhoun and Perfidia Beverly Hills are lovers inside the French 75, a militant group on the far left. During a raid on an immigrant detention center, Perfidia humiliates the commanding officer, Steven J. Lockjaw, and he becomes fixated on her. She gives birth to a daughter, Charlene, and leaves Pat to keep fighting. A comrade supplies them with stolen identities: Pat becomes Bob, the girl becomes Willa. Sixteen years later they live off the grid in Baktan Cross, California, where Bob is a paranoid stoner and Willa, a self-reliant teenager, resents his drug use. She has been told that her mother died a hero. Lockjaw, now a colonel, sends troops into the town, and the two are separated.

- Actor and cinematographer collector Giovanni Ribisi is thanked in the film's end credits for letting One Battle After Another use VistaVision cameras that he had personally restored.
- Newcomer Chase Infiniti won the part of Willa Ferguson, the central character's teenage daughter, through a six-month audition process with multiple callbacks, camera tests and chemistry reads with Leonardo DiCaprio and Regina Hall.
- Ronald Reagan's former Sacramento mansion supplied the exterior shots of the Christmas Adventurers Club headquarters, tying the film back to Thomas Pynchon's novel and its focus on Reagan.
- It was the first time since Boogie Nights in 1997 that Paul Thomas Anderson agreed to audience testing, and based on the feedback he cut eight to ten minutes from the film.
- Cinematographer Michael Bauman said VistaVision runs the film eight-perf horizontal instead of the usual four-perf vertical, making each frame twice the size of a normal 35 mm camera's and giving a richer image.
