Plot summary
In Dapplewood, a meadow, the badger Cornelius teaches Abigail the mouse, Edgar the mole, Russell the hedgehog and his niece Michelle. On a walk the class reaches a road, where a bottle thrown from a car bursts a truck's tire. The truck spills poison gas into the forest. Michelle breathes the fumes and falls unconscious. Cornelius tells the three Furlings that only two herbs, Lung-wort and Eye-bright, can help her, and the gas has killed the nearby patches. They must journey to another meadow and return within two days.

- More than ten minutes were cut from Once Upon a Forest before release because of time and budget limits, and one deleted scene featured the voice of Glenn Close, whose character was removed from the finished storyline entirely.
- The feature animation unit Hanna-Barbera set up to make Once Upon a Forest and Jetsons: The Movie was spun off into Turner Feature Animation under Turner Entertainment, and Hanna-Barbera itself never made another theatrical animated film before being dissolved in 2001.
- Members of South Central Los Angeles' First Baptist Church were chosen to voice the chorus accompanying Ben Vereen's preacher bird Phineas; during live-action reference filming they began flipping their arms and moving their tambourines, which Kirschner recalled thrilled the crew.
