Plot summary
George Milton and Lennie Small travel together during the Great Depression, looking for farm work. George is quick-witted; Lennie is strong and mentally disabled. Their last job ended when Lennie held on to a woman's dress and was accused of attempted rape, because he loves to stroke soft things. The two escape the men who set dogs after them, take a bus from Salinas, and find work at Tyler Ranch near Soledad, where George describes the land they will own one day and the rabbits Lennie will tend. The Boss grows suspicious of Lennie, so George claims a horse kicked Lennie in the head when he was a boy. They befriend Candy, an old one-handed ranch hand, while Curley, the Boss's son, torments them, Curley's wife flirts, and George tells Lennie to keep his distance from her.
