Plot summary
In 1987, Conor Marsh shares a quiet routine in Baltimore with his dog, Sandy. An ad in a computer magazine introduces him to OBEX, a game whose demon villain, Ixaroth, devours human souls. He buys it, and finds its play disappointingly simple. That night his printer wakes him with a note saying something is hidden among his VHS tapes. He searches them and finds nothing; then Ixaroth comes out of the television set and takes Sandy. The next morning a Macintosh computer waits outside and draws him into the game's world. A shopkeeper there supplies him for the journey, and on the road he pulls Victor, a traveler with a television for a head, free of cicada-like figures. Victor decides to come along.
