Plot summary
On May 7, 1945, one day before Nazi Germany surrenders, Hermann Göring gives himself up with his family to American forces in Austria. Associate Justice Robert Jackson learns of the arrest and discusses with his secretary, Elsie Douglas, a court that would put the surviving Nazi leadership on trial for war crimes; Douglas notes that no such action has international precedent. The Army psychiatrist Douglas Kelley travels to Bad Mondorf, Luxembourg, to assess twenty-two Nazi leaders in Allied custody, Göring among them. Warden Colonel Burton Andrus receives him, and Sergeant Howard Triest interprets.
