Plot summary
Francesco Dellamorte is the caretaker of the cemetery in the small Italian town of Buffalora, where he lives on the grounds with his assistant Gnaghi, a man who speaks one word. Some of those buried there rise again within seven nights as aggressive creatures Dellamorte calls Returners, and he shoots them before they can reach the town. The mayor is absorbed in his reelection campaign and ignores his pleas for an investigation; Dellamorte, an outcast in the village, would rather keep shooting than risk his job. At a funeral he meets the young widow of a wealthy elderly man and falls in love with her; she is delighted when he tells her about the ossuary.

- Tiziano Sclavi created the comic character Dylan Dog in 1986 and visually based him on Rupert Everett. When the film was made, Everett was cast as Francesco Dellamorte as an in-joke and costumed in a fashion deliberately reminiscent of Dylan Dog.
