Plot summary
Nate Burns leaves the Baltimore homicide squad to become chief of police in a small Alaskan town, carrying the weight of a partner who was shot and killed. The residents keep their distance, but he takes an interest in Meg Galligan, a young pilot. Her father walked out in 1994 and never came back, and her mother Charlene raised her alone; the two women argue often. When two climbers go missing, Nate joins the search and asks Meg to fly him there. On the mountain he finds a frozen body: Meg's father, with the axe that killed him still in place. Meg, angry at him for leaving, cannot bring herself to mourn. She pushes Nate to look into the case, though he chose this town to get away from murder.
