Billy Merasty
Biography
Billy Merasty is a Cree actor and writer from Canada. He was born in Brochet, Manitoba, and went to Toronto at 18. He trained at the Centre for Indigenous Theatre, which serves First Nations artists, and began his acting career at 23. For many years he worked with Native Earth Performing Arts. His stage and film career has been extensive; on stage he played Gloucester in an all-aboriginal King Lear at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa in 2012. He wrote the play Fireweed, produced in 1992, and a second play, Godly's Divinia, has been in development. In 2010 he was given the Order of Manitoba, also called the Order of the Buffalo Hunt, for his work as a role model for Aboriginal people in the province.
