Plot summary
Northern Italy, twelfth century. Frederick, the German emperor known as Barbarossa, rules the north and wants to add the center and south to his empire. On a hunt a wild boar attacks him, and a boy, Alberto da Giussano, saves him; the emperor gives the boy his dagger in thanks. Years later, envoys from Lodi ask Barbarossa to protect them from Milan, so he sends Milan a letter warning it not to attack the city. A cleric tramples the letter in front of the imperial messenger, and Milan's army marches on Lodi. Barbarossa, who had no wish to fight, is furious, and his new queen urges him to march on Milan and destroy it.
