Plot summary
Adolf Dassler, known as Adi, is a skilled craftsman whose dream is that the best athletes in the world will wear the shoes he makes. His brother Rudolf, known as Rudi, is the businessman of the pair, taking charge of sales and marketing. In the 1920s the two of them start manufacturing sports shoes together. When the Second World War is over, they go on producing shoes. Their working relationship then begins to break down, as each brother claims the company as his own. The quarrel grows into a lasting rivalry between them, and two sportswear brands carry it on to this day.

- The real Dassler brothers, Adolf and Rudolf, both joined the NSDAP in May 1933, and their shoe factory produced the Panzerschreck anti-tank weapon and used French forced labourers, which led to denazification proceedings against Adolf Dassler and the firm.
- For the hometown of the Dassler brothers, Herzogenaurach, the production used Bad Münstereifel, chosen for its historic buildings and its almost completely preserved town wall.
- The exterior scenes of the 1954 World Cup final, shown towards the end of the film, were recreated in the Jahnkampfbahn in Solingen.
