Plot summary
In 2011, the US Gypsum plant in Empire, Nevada closes, and Fern loses the job she had held there for years. Her husband has recently died. She sells most of her belongings and buys a van to live in, traveling the country in search of work and spending a winter at an Amazon warehouse. A friend and co-worker, Linda, invites her to a desert gathering in Arizona that Bob organizes as a support system for nomads. Fern first declines, then changes her mind when the weather turns cold and work is hard to find, and there she meets other nomads and learns skills for surviving on the road.
