Plot summary
Father Jonathan Keene travels from parish to parish closing the ones the church no longer considers viable. A week before Christmas he reaches a fishing village where the congregation has fallen from 150 to 20 under its pastor, Simeon Joyce. At the bus station Keene bumps into a young woman and picks up her glove; at the church he returns it, and she introduces herself as Marjorie Worthington, the village librarian, before going back to an argument with her boyfriend, Seth Harrod. At the Nativity play rehearsal Simeon announces that Keene is taking over the parish and walks out, leaving the production to him. Keene asks Marjorie to play Mary, but she refuses, calling herself an atheist and the virgin birth preposterous. Keene answers with an argument about evolution, and she tells him she will think about it.
