Plot summary
Joseph Stern goes by Jose Stern now, a change he made after learning he is one-eighth Mexican. He began as an indie rocker. Turning 40 is close, and his band, The Borges, has been reduced to playing children's birthday parties. He was a little miserable before; he is very miserable now. Dusty, his fiancee, is a warm and supportive veterinarian who balances him.
