Plot summary
Will judges souls before they are born, interviewing candidates in an isolated house in a desert for the chance to live on Earth. Kyo, who was never alive himself, assists with the process and makes sure Will selects the best candidate. Screens fill the house, each showing a person Will has already chosen, and he takes notes on how they live. His favorite is Amanda, a violin prodigy. Rejected souls get one experience of their choosing before they are erased. When Amanda dies, a vacancy opens, and a new group of candidates arrives for a process that takes nine days. Will asks them about life and about what they like or dislike in the people he has selected. Emma draws his attention with her curiosity and empathy.

- The character of Will is based on director Edson Oda's uncle, who died by suicide at age 50 when Oda was 12, and Oda wanted to write about what his uncle was going through rather than judge him for what he did.
- Winston Duke, fresh off Us, met with Edson Oda in a meeting that turned into a four-hour conversation and got the lead role the day after, though the part had originally been set to be played by an Asian actor.
- For crying in point-of-view shots, cinematographer Wyatt Garfield sealed water inside cellophane candy bags and squeezed them in front of the lens.
- The film's last scene, a three-page monologue, was shot over a single sunset with no rehearsal or choreography, and filming then wrapped early on a Wednesday at 9 a.m.
- After specialty distributors including A24 and Searchlight Pictures turned the producers down, Jason Michael Berman assembled at least a dozen executive producers to raise the film's $10 million budget.
- An exterior set built at the Bonneville Salt Flats carried a facade of Will's house, a spot Oda said was meant to make viewers feel they were not really on Earth.
