Plot summary
The split from her husband Jack, who left her for another woman, has left Adrienne Willis at odds with her teenage daughter Amanda. Jack asks to move back home; Adrienne is not ready to answer. She drives to Rodanthe, North Carolina, to run a friend's beachfront inn for a weekend, where her only guest is Paul Flanner, a surgeon. A patient of his, Jill Torrelson, died on the operating table during a routine procedure, and her husband Robert, who lives in Rodanthe, is suing him for wrongful death. Paul has also grown distant from his son Mark, a doctor working in Ecuador. A storm closes in on the coast, and the two work together to protect the inn.
