Plot summary
Sami Benboudaoud's mother takes a job on a boat, so the fourteen-year-old leaves Chalon-sur-Saône to live with his aunt Djamila in Neuilly-sur-Seine, an affluent Paris suburb. Djamila is married to Stanislas de Chazelle, whose children Charles and Caroline share the house. Sami enrolls at the private school Saint-Exupéry, where classmates mock him, especially Guilain Lambert. Marie, a violinist, notices his tender side when a piece in music class moves Sami to tears. He and Marie become friends, but Guilain also has his eye on her and tricks Sami into eating pork, which he cannot eat. Sami beats Guilain, and Marie tells him she will not tolerate violent boys.
