Plot summary
Claude Verneuil, a notary, and his wife Marie are a Catholic couple in Chinon with four daughters. The three eldest, Isabelle, Odile and Ségolène, have each married a man of a different faith and background: an Algerian Muslim lawyer, a Sephardi Jewish entrepreneur and a Han Chinese atheist banker. Claude and Marie pretend to accept these sons-in-law, yet their discomfort keeps surfacing, and a family meeting breaks down over remarks about race and religion, traded by the father and the sons-in-law alike. The couple pin their remaining hopes on Laure, the youngest, wanting a Catholic for her. They even arrange a chance meeting with Xavier, a Catholic working in finance. Laure tells them she has already chosen a partner, Charles, a Catholic, and means to marry him. Her parents are delighted.
