Plot summary
Mattia comes from a modest background and arrives in Venice in the 1930s to study piano at the conservatory. He becomes friends with Renato, another student, and meets Renato's widowed mother, Carla, who gives piano lessons and has little money. Mattia and Carla begin an affair that they keep secret. Carla intends Renato to marry one of her pupils, Elena, the daughter of a wealthy family, and arranges a dinner so the two can meet. Renato invites Mattia to the same dinner, and Elena and Mattia are immediately drawn to each other. Mattia walks Elena and her brother back to their palazzo as a storm breaks, and the family asks him to stay the night.
