Plot summary

John McGill grows up in 1970s Glasgow, a brilliant pupil in a working-class household. His mother works part time at a hospital, and his father is an abusive alcoholic who works as a tool-maker. His older brother Benny heads a neighborhood gang, the Young Car-D. Auntie Beth, visiting from New York, urges John to leave Scotland one day for opportunities there. Canta, a local bully with the Hardridge Puka Pie Gang, threatens John on his last day of primary school; John tells Benny, and Benny and his gang track Canta down. At secondary school John does well but stays apart from his classmates, and a teacher suggests he spend the summer at a camp for children with disabilities, where he befriends a middle-class boy, Julian.
