Plot summary
Violet Jones grew up with a mother, Paulette, who straightened her natural hair and rushed her home after other children teased her at a pool. As an adult Violet works as an advertising executive and keeps her hair straight and long, and she has a doctor boyfriend, Clint. She expects him to propose on her birthday, but a neighbor's children spray her, so she rushes to the salon, where a relaxer is applied by mistake and she loses handfuls of it. She leaves with a weave. At her birthday dinner Clint gives her a chihuahua instead of a ring; when she confronts him, he says he does not feel he knows her, and Violet ends it.
