Plot summary
Robert Egan, a professor who wrote a best-selling book, was committed to a psychiatric facility after his wife died, and his daughter Emily went into foster care. She has been passed between homes for two years, wearing her mother's bracelet and waiting each year for the birthday card Robert sends. Arden, a shy new classmate who is smitten with her, gives her a copy of The Grapes of Wrath, and she keeps him at a distance. No card arrives on her sixteenth birthday, so she asks Arden to help her travel to the institution and bring Robert back. They skip school, take his grandmother's yellow Renault 4, and set off across Ireland.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Writer-director Simon Fitzmaurice was diagnosed with motor neurone disease the day he and his wife learned they were expecting their third child; completely paralysed and given four years to live, he finished the script on a Tobii eye-gaze computer that turned his eye movements into words.
- Because his computer software was sensitive to direct sunlight, Simon Fitzmaurice had to be sheltered under darkened tents during the shoot so that he could communicate through his computer with his cast and crew.
- To raise production costs, the producers launched a thirty-day Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign on 8 November 2013 that drew backing from Irish and British celebrities Colin Farrell, Alan Rickman, Sam Neill, Jim Sheridan, Lenny Abrahamson, Kirsten Sheridan and Shimmy Marcus.
- Before shooting began, director Frankie Fenton started a documentary feature, It's Not Yet Dark, following both the progression of Fitzmaurice's disease and the filming of Emily.
