Plot summary
Sophie has a dull job at a travel agency in Beijing. She daydreams and draws cartoons of imaginary adventures with a handsome hero, or spends time with her friends Lily and Lucy. She wins an all-expenses-paid trip to a luxury hotel in Singapore, and when Lily and Lucy drop out at the last minute, she goes on her own. At the hotel she meets David, who looks like the hero she draws. David is an American secret agent working to recover the stolen Lucky Star diamond.

- After just one day of shooting, My Lucky Star's entire Hong Kong set was wrecked by a typhoon, and the production had no insurance. Director Dennie Gordon said the shoot was down 10 days while the set was rebuilt.
- Short of money for stunt equipment, the production was rescued when Jackie Chan visited his former co-stars Zhang Ziyi and Leehom Wang on set and offered his action team, including stunt master Wu Gang; their gear was at Gordon's disposal the next day.
- The film holds a first: My Lucky Star is the first Chinese-language movie to be directed by an American woman, Dennie Gordon.
- Three weeks into the shoot, Dennie Gordon cut a three-minute trailer and took it around to every crew member on her iPad, telling them she wanted them to see the movie they were making together. She said she borrowed the trick from the Wachowskis' first Matrix.
- My Lucky Star is dedicated to the memory of Taiwanese actor Morris Rong, who plays Li Wan. Rong died of a heart attack at the age of 43 in January 2013, months before the movie came out.
