Plot summary
Fiona's suicide leaves Jane adrift, and her way of making sense of it is to help Gemma, Fiona's widow, care for Bailey, the couple's seven-year-old son. Jane and Fiona had been a pair since kindergarten, Jane content to follow wherever Fiona went. The two women are opposites: Jane's carefree nature suits Bailey's imagination, while Gemma throws herself into work rather than let anyone see the cracks in her facade. Jane's presence gives the household some stability, and she takes on more of the daily life of Fiona's family, living the life her friend left behind. The friendship she and Gemma share deepens into an unexpected intimacy.
