Plot summary
Mo and his elder brother Rashid are the sons of Egyptian immigrants and grow up in Hackney, in east London, in the family home. Rashid looks after his younger brother, rewarding him with a television when he does well and telling him to stay in school. The money Rashid earns selling drugs at a low level in a local gang pays for small comforts around the house. Mo, fourteen, lonely and sensitive, hungers for the talk and banter of friends and wants to be taken for a tough guy. He takes a job of his own in that trade, and while running a drop-off for Rashid's gang he is robbed by members of a rival crew.
