Plot summary
Jake Rosser is a K-9 handler with the Los Angeles Police Department, and Ace is the dog that serves as his partner. Ace is killed on Skid Row in front of him, and Rosser attacks a paramedic who will not treat the animal. He is then ordered into mandatory therapy if he wants to keep working as a K-9 handler. He attends the sessions and spends his own time on the question of who killed Ace. He also picks a second dog, named Socks. The inquiry leads him toward a conspiracy that has a hold on the city and reaches inside the LAPD.
