Plot summary

Johann works as a guard at Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum. Anne, a Canadian, is in the city because a relative is seriously ill. She has never been to Austria before and has little money, so she wanders Vienna and takes the museum as a refuge. The two begin to talk, and their meeting opens explorations of their own lives and of the museum and the city around them. At the Bruegel exhibit, where Johann stands guard, a guide tells visitors that the painter gave humble, everyday matter as much pictorial space as his religious subjects, and one visitor insists that only deep faith could have produced such passion.
