Plot summary
Christian Gilbranson, the lawyer who handles Miss Jane Marple's affairs, persuades her to visit Stonygates, the country estate of his stepmother, Carrie Louise Serrocold. Carrie Louise is a friend of Marple's, and Marple's arrival at the mansion brings the two of them together again. Carrie Louise's husband, Lewis, is devoted to her, and he has turned Stonygates into a halfway house where criminals stay. Lewis takes Marple aside and confides that he believes someone is poisoning Carrie Louise with arsenic.
